About

Alan Spitzer has been photographing since the 1970's, when he purchased his first camera following the birth of his son. Initially, his images focused on the early years of his children, Steve, Sara, and Lauren, along with his wife, Elaine, but somewhere along the way, he began to point his camera elsewhere and began a long-term passion for the landscape. The opportunity to study with some of the foremost landscape photographers in the country only served to increase this passion. Some of his more notable workshop mentors have included Ansel Adams, Paul Caponigro, John Paul Caponigro, Bruce Barnbaum, John Sexton, Seth Resnick, Ray MacSavaney, and Jay Dusard.

Alan had numerous shows in the Philadelphia area during the late 1980's and early 1990's, but his photography then took a back seat for 20 years, as he decided to pursue research in his other career, neonatal medicine. His work in neonatal medicine resulted in more than 250 original publications, books, and book chapters. In 2015, he was also named the recipient of the Fanaroff National Education Award of the Neonatal-Perinatal Section of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

In 2015, he retired from medical practice and returned to his travels and full-time photography. After an interruption because of the Covid pandemic, he has now resumed his photo journeys.
